Day 1 Deer & Lang Caves: Pick up from airport and transfer to Gunung Mulu National Park to check in to accommodation. Free at leisure to explore Mulu Park’s interpretation centre and lunch (on own account). Deer Cave is the world’s largest cave passage with the entrance measuring 150m wide, 120m high and roof no less than 90m high inside. The cave has a moon-like landscape and from one vantage point, a perfect profile of President Lincoln can be observed. Next to Deer Cave is Langs Cave where its stalactites and stalagmites are representative of the very best limestone formations in the park. A Bat Observatory is outside Deer Cave and about 2 million bats can be seen leaving the cave on most evenings in search of food. Trek back to the park HQ with a torchlight and return to accommodation.
Day 2 Wind & Clearwater Caves (Camp 5) (B/L/D): Depart the park HQ at 8:45am and proceed upriver in a longboat to Wind Cave with its impressive "King’s Chamber" and delicate lace-like patterned stalactites and stalagmites. A short walk along a plankwalk next to the limestone cliff followed by a climb up approximately 250 concrete steps to Clearwater Cave which is a natural habitat for unique plants such as the rare one-leafed plant which can only be found in Mulu and photo-sensitive algae which grows on certain rocks that produce needle-like formations pointing towards the source of light. Near Clearwater Cave there is a wonderful swimming area shaded by giant rainforest trees and it is where travellers can enjoy a simple picnic or packed lunch. After lunch proceed to the 1-hour boat ride of Long Litut before trekking through a mixed dipterocarp and riparian forest for about 3 hours to Camp 5. Overnight at Camp 5 in basic dormitory accommodation equipped with basic common toilet facilities.
Day 3 Gunung Api/Pinnacles (B/L/D): After breakfast, scale up Gunung Api for about 4 to 5 hours for the limestone pinnacles and have packed lunch at the Pinnacles’ viewpoint. Thereafter descend back to Camp 5 and overnight.
